Do Pomeranians’ Teeth Fall Out?

There’s no other feeling than seeing our bouncing Pomeranians looking up to us with a big, happy smile. Sometimes you’ll hear a bark or two (or more!), but you’ll definitely get a nice visual of their teeth. Sadly, Pomeranians are susceptible to dental issues that could lead to unfortunate outcomes that could’ve been completely avoided, which is why the question “Do Pomeranian’s teeth fall out?” has become a common question.

So, do Pomeranian’s teeth fall out? A Pomeranian’s teeth can fall out for several reasons, including them outgrowing their baby teeth and bacterial disease. Overcrowding teeth and consistent breathing through the mouth can also lead to greater chances of teeth and gum problems in Pomeranians.

When it comes to the teeth of Pomeranians, they generally have a much smaller mouth when compared to other dog breeds. This can cause several teeth and gum problems that are, unfortunately, not uncommon. The good news is that these issues can be completely avoided and treated if they show up.

Why Do Pomeranians’ Teeth Fall Out?

Pomeranians have a temperament that some would refer to as “royal”. In my opinion, they’re some of the proudest dog breeds I’ve ever owned and a lot of that pride comes from the comfort in how they look and feel. If you’ve ever given your Pomeranian a short haircut, you’ll notice a drop in their mood for a little bit.

Another factor that can affect Pomeranians is the health of their teeth and gums. Unfortunately for Pomeranians, they tend to be diagnosed with bacterial infections that can cause damage to their teeth and gums. When this happens, it can be the case that, if left untreated, their teeth may begin to fall out.

Some of the most common reasons for why do Pomeranians’ teeth fall out include:

  • Outgrowing baby teeth
  • Overcrowding teeth
  • Regular mouth breathing
  • Bacterial disease

These are by far the most common reasons for your Pomeranian to lose their teeth. While some are unavoidable, most can be avoided and easily treated with the right methods.

As you might have expected, the experience of losing baby teeth is one that every single Pomeranian will experience. However, it may take longer or shorter depending on your Pomeranian, so it’s important to keep an eye out for how long they have them. If baby teeth stick around for too long, they could become infected resulting in a necessary trip to your local veterinarian.

Being such a small breed, Pomeranians also have extremely small mouths, even when compared to other small breeds. One of the outcomes of having such a small mouth leads to overcrowding of the teeth, which can cause pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, having overcrowded teeth can also lead to gum and teeth infections resulting in your Pomeranian losing some of their pearly whites.

Another important difference between Pomeranians and other dog breeds is they tend to breathe mostly through their mouths. While this might not seem like an issue, it can lead to problems, including loss of teeth. Through consistent mouth breathing, Pomeranians tend to have dry mouths which can reduce saliva flow which removes the chance for natural cleansing and protection.

The final outcome to all of these Pomeranian-specific issues can be their teeth falling out. The main reason for this is tartar and plaque will build up in their mouths resulting in gingivitis or other gum diseases. Unfortunately, these bacterial infections can lead to your Pomeranian losing their teeth prematurely, which can be expensive to treat and a blow to your Pomeranian’s personality.

Not only will your Pomeranian’s infected gums and teeth lead to them losing their teeth, but it may also result in the bacterial infection to spread causing further damage to other parts of their body. Sadly, this can cause damage to your Pomeranians kidneys, liver, heart, and joints, which can lead to a shorter lifespan.

How to Take Care of Your Pomeranian’s Teeth

As you’ve probably become aware, it’s important to keep our Pomeranians’ mouth clean, from their gums all the way to the tip of their teeth. While gum and teeth disease isn’t uncommon among Pomeranians for the reasons we already discussed, it’s quite easy to keep their teeth and gums healthy and shiny.

By far the easiest thing you can do to ensure your Pomeranian’s teeth are healthy is to take them to your local veterinarian regularly. I usually take my Poms to the vet every 6 months so they can get a thorough check-up and teeth cleaning. It just so happens that their breath starts to get a bit stinky at this point, so it works out well for everyone!

While you definitely want to take your Pomeranian to the vet regularly, it’s also important to give their teeth a nice cleaning yourself from time to time. You can easily do this by brushing their teeth every couple of weeks using a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste. I personally like to use the PenVinoo Soft Finger Toothbrush (link to read reviews on Amazon) since it makes it a whole lot easier to clean my Pomeranians’ teeth quickly and easily.

I know a lot of Pom parents that aren’t too keen on brushing their dog’s teeth, so instead they opt for rinsing their mouths using dental water additives. It’s incredibly easy to use because all you have to do is add a little amount to their water bowl and they’ll drink it up without even noticing. My friends like to use Oxyfresh Premium Pet Dental Water Additive (link to read reviews on Amazon), so maybe you’ll like it too!

Apart from keeping your Pomeranian’s mouth clean by visiting the vet, brushing their teeth, and using a water additive, you can also just give your Pomeranians a dental chew. Apart from the water additive, this is probably the easiest way to keep your Pomeranians teeth clean because it’s essentially forcing any tartar or plaque build-up to be scraped off in the middle of a chew session. Plus, dogs love to chew on their toys, especially if they taste good!
